How do I transfer my domain to BT Business?

Your website and email addresses won't transfer automatically. If you plan to use us to host either, make sure you do a backup transferring your domain name. You'll then need to recreate them on our systems once the transfer completes.

If you have a domain registered with another company and you want to transfer it to BT Business, you can do so in a few simple steps. Choose which type of domain you're transferring from the options below and follow the steps provided.

If your domain name ends with .com, .net, .biz, .info or .org:

You'll need an authorisation code called an AuthInfo Code from your domain supplier before you transfer. You should also make sure the administrative email address for your domain is one you still use.

  1. Get an AuthInfo code from your old provider.
  2. Sign in to Manage services.
  3. In the Domains section, click on Transfer a domain name to BT.
  4. The BT Domains Centre, Transfer in page is displayed.
  5. In the AuthInfo field, enter the AuthInfo code.
  6. Click on the transfer button.
  7. You'll get an email to your domain's admin email address asking you to confirm the transfer. You must click on the link in this email to authorise and begin the transfer.
  8. The transfer will take 7-30 days to complete. If you contact your old host, they may be able to speed this up.

We'll normally send you an email when your transfer is completed. Our system will then add the domain to your account, so you can set up email addresses and activate web hosting.

If your domain name ends with .uk:

  1. Contact your supplier and ask for the IPS tag to be changed to BTNAMES. Once the IPS tag changes your previous supplier loses control of the domain.
  2. Double check the IPS tag has changed by checking your domain in a WHOIS site such as the one provided by Nominet. Only proceed once the tag has updated to BTNAMES.
  3. Sign in to Manage services.
  4. In the Domains section, click on Transfer a domain to BT.
  5. The BT Domains Centre, Transfer in page is displayed.
  6. In the Domain name field, enter your domain name.
  7. Click on the transfer button.
  8. The transfer will take 1-7 days to complete.

We'll normally send you an email when your transfer is completed. Our system will then add the domain to your account, so you can set up aliases and activate hosting.

The company your domain is registered with may also send you an email asking you to confirm the transfer.
